No one is coming to save you. People need other people but you alone are responsible for your life. If you want things to change, if you want this year to feel different, you will have to be the person who shows up.
The past is not the future. Bitterness doesn’t serve you. Scapegoats do not help. You can blame them, you can hate the thing you used to love, or you can get on with your life.
Spend less money than you make.
Clear is kind. The friend zone has felt like shit since you were 12 years old. And you are not 11. So if love remains the dream, then don’t settle for limbo. Bring your heart to where it’s welcome. Plus if you’re left feeling like shit, that’s not much of a friendship.
If you want to continue public speaking, then you have to play the game. Opportunities came easy for a long time. If you want to keep doing this unique work, parts of it will have to look different. Reinvention. Innovation. Adapt or die.
If you want to write a second book, you will have to actually write a second book. You will have to leave your comfort zone, get organized, make a plan, and follow through. You will have to show up day after day for weeks and weeks and weeks. You will have to get lost in the process. Or you can keep making excuses but there will never be a second book. The choice is yours. The ball is in your court.
If you want to start a podcast, just start a fucking podcast. Let go of perfection. Stop being afraid of failure.
You’re good at talking about self-care while sitting in this chair for hours, but actual self-care will require places other than this chair, your bed, your couch. You will need to leave your house and move your body. Go outside with Gracie. Go surfing. Go play basketball. And go be with people too.
This recent self-medication. This recent drug of choice. Doesn’t work. Ultimately does not satisfy.
You’re good at vulnerability, good at empathy, good at meaning. The season ahead will require other parts of you. It’s time to use some other muscles.
Keep embracing paradox and contradiction. Keep calling bullshit on being superhuman. Choose instead more being human.
You need some things to look forward to.
Lean into the desire for new.
Adapt or die.
Adapt or die.
Adapt or die.
If you missed BEGIN AGAIN, both recordings are available. Nearly five hours of video for five dollars. There’s a crewneck sweatshirt too.
Upcoming small-group conversations: Saturday, 1/20 - “What I Believe About God and What God Believes About Me” Tuesday, 1/30 - “I’m in a Season of Change”
If you need a speaker for an upcoming event, or want to get creative in making something happen, I’m booked by Collective Speakers. From middle schools to corporate gatherings, in-person or virtual, keynote or workshop, I’m grateful for every chance I get to encourage groups of people. Sean and the team at Collective are happy to help.
I listened to Mel Robbins’ podcast on Monday about getting motivated and it started with “when the alarm goes off in the morning, get your fu$&ing ass out of bed”. I needed a kick in the pants too. 2024 hasn’t been amazing but it’s just getting started. Today’s a year since my friend died and last night I decided today was going to be about living. It’s easy to forget sometimes how privileged we are to do it. My friend was an astrophysicist and today we found out an asteroid ☄️ is being named after him. Keep on keeping on, Jamie.
This! Love the vulnerability and hope you are able to push yourself into this uncomfortable version. No one sees the work that goes into the finished product. Start today. Don’t be afraid to be a different version of success. Thanks for sharing!
